The story of JCB’s Backhoe Loader began in 1953 when the first model, the Mark One, was built in Rocester, Staffordshire. It introduced hydraulic power to construction, changing the industry forever. Since then, JCB has continuously improved its Backhoe range, reaching the impressive milestone of one million units.
JCB’s success has been remarkable. The first 50,000 Backhoes took over 20 years to produce. However, the company then speed up production significantly:
JCB manufactures these machines in the UK, India, and Brazil, ensuring a strong global presence. The Backhoe remains one of the best-selling construction machines worldwide.
The Backhoe Loader is widely used because it can perform multiple tasks, making it essential for construction professionals. The 4CX model, which became the one-millionth unit, is known for its advanced technology and excellent performance.
JCB celebrated this milestone at its World Headquarters, with hundreds of employees and special guests attending. A highlight of the event was a parade of 16 Backhoes, showcasing models from 1954’s Mark I to the latest 2025 3CX.
A special guest at the celebration was Ken Harrison, a 100-year-old retired JCB employee, symbolizing the company’s rich history and lasting impact on the industry.

JCB Chairman, Lord Bamford, shared his excitement:
