Vedanta Aluminium Expands Electric Forklift Fleet

Key Highlights:

  • Vedanta Aluminium now has 66 electric forklifts, adding 22 new ones at its Jharsuguda plant.
  • The electric forklifts will cut CO2 emissions by 2,500 tonnes and save 840,000 litres of diesel each year.
  • Vedanta Aluminium plans to make all its light vehicles electric by 2030 and reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Vedanta Aluminium has increased its fleet of electric lithium-ion forklifts to 66 units, greatly strengthening its sustainability initiatives. The recent installation of 22 electric forklifts at its smelter operations in Jharsuguda, Odisha, is a significant step toward the company's decarbonization goals.

According to John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, "Sustainability is a business imperative. We are always adopting innovative approaches to improve our operational performance. The deployment of 66 electric lithium-ion forklifts is a significant step in accelerating our transition to a Net Zero future."

This not only increases operational efficiency but also dramatically lowers carbon emissions. The deployment of electric forklifts is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 2,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year and save more than 840,000 gallons of diesel.

The company has pledged to decarbonize all of its light motor vehicle (LMV) fleet by 2030. This continuous endeavor demonstrates Vedanta Aluminium's commitment to evaluating and deploying innovative technology to decarbonize its operations.

Vedanta is one of India's first firms to implement sustainable operational principles, particularly in material handling. The company is a pioneer in adopting sustainable material handling procedures in India.

This expansion of the electric forklift fleet is another step toward reaching Net Zero by 2050. To offset its carbon footprint, Vedanta Aluminium plans to improve operating efficiency, use more renewable energy, and conduct major afforestation operations.
